Preliminary Thoughts

a)Thesis = Possibilites
b)Thesis = Opportunites
c)Thesis = Consequences?!

Right now --> I am in the exploration phase with the intent to avoid c.

Thoughts:

1.
Architecture as a means of economic development (AKDN?)

2. Disaster Relief ( taking a previous studio project and taking it the next level - research material, means of assembly, specific locations)

3. Looking into the relationship between architecture and the values of a society. In the past, specific architecture and planning was very indicative of a societies cultural values, does architecture and the build environment have that retroactive power in today's society?

4. Mythology and Architecture

Aliya,

Your first pass seems to be a listing of General Topics, rather then "Thoughts". Can you elaborate a bit as to what interests you in any of the four areas you have identified?

1) Architecture as a means of Economic Development: Take a look at the projects of the Aga Kahn Development Network. Are there any in particular that you feel represent strong values you hold. Bring forward some examples and lets discuss their relevance to a project.

2) Disaster Relief- Please read Victoria Lee's UG thesis. It is a very nicely organized study of the general challenges of disaster relief shelter, a range of others solutions with their pros and cons, looking at a particular disaster where shelter is needed, developing the criteria for a successful solution, producing a prototype that is based on the particular culture in need, and evaluating it against the established criteria.

3) Relationship between architecture and the values of Society: I would say the answer to you question is yes. But before you pursue this too deeply, can you provide an example of how this has worked in the past. If you were to pursue a design project in this arena, you would be asked to demonstrate how values make themselves apparent in architectural artifacts and then identify a set of values that you would like your thesis work to embody.

4) Mythology and Architecture: This is very similar to #3 above, just substitute the word myth for values.

Can I recommend that you select one or two of the above Topics and provide a paragraph or two about your thoughts and questions in in that area.

Thanks, Alan
